63 people arrested for crossing the highway and illegal street trading in Lagos

The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, on Tuesday, March 19, arrested 63 people for allegedly crossing the highway and engaging in illegal street trading.

The state government had in February threatened to arrest and prosecute people crossing the major highways in the state rather than using the pedestrian.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the arrest of the suspects via his verified X handle on Monday, adding that they had immediately been charged in court following the state’s environment management law.

He wrote, “Earlier today, the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (@LAGESCOfficial) operatives arrested 63 people for crossing the highway and illegal street trading.

“They have been taken to court for trial per the Lagos State Environmental Management Law 2017.”

The ministry had also recently intensified its campaign against street trading and ejecting roadside traders.
