FG should tackle food insecurity – Atiku Abubakar

0

Former Nigerian vice president, Atiku Abubakar has urged the Federal Government to fight insecurity to help bolster food security in the country.

Atiku called for good policies by the federal government to tackle the rising insecurity that has crippled farmers in their production capacity.

He wrote: Farmers and other agricultural value chain workers cannot go to their farms due to the crisis of insecurity. I should know. I am heavily invested in large-scale farming, and employ a workforce of over 10,000 in the endeavour.

The major cause of the present and looming dearth of food is insecurity.

Let Us Address This Looming Food Crisis Before It Becomes a Calamity. The warning given by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, @FAO, on Wednesday, July 29, 2021, of a looming acute food crisis in Northern Nigeria should not be ignored.

What ought to happen is that the Federal and State governments should establish a Food Security Military Taskforce to work in farming clusters, to provide security for the nation’s farmers.

We must give confidence to our agriculture workers, so that the sector can get on with the job of feeding the nation.

Kafayat Lawal, 45, was detained by men from the Ogun State Police Command for fatally beating her 17-year-old daughter, Ayomide Adekoya.

According to a statement released by DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, the state police command’s spokesperson, the suspect was apprehended after Dpo Ogijo divisional headquarters CSP Mohammed Suleman Baba received information at about 2:30 p.m. that the suspect secured her two daughters in a room. The daughters were rushed to the hospital but unfortunately one of them lost her life.

”Upon the information, the Dpo mobilized his men and moved to the scene where the two victims were rescued and taken to hospital for treatment before one of them gave up the ghost.

The suspect was then arrested and taken to custody. On interrogation, the suspect who claimed to have separated from her husband nine years ago informed the police that her two daughters left home during the Salah and didn’t return till the following day.

This infuriated her, and when she wanted to beat them, people around pleaded on their behalf and she left them, only for them to go out again the following day and passed the night outside. It was the annoyance that made her lock them inside and injured them both with broken bottle.

The older one Blessing Adekoya 19 was injured in the hand, while her younger sister Ayomide was stabbed in the chest and unfortunately gave up the ghost while receiving treatment.”

CP Edward Awolowo Ajogun, the commissioner of police, has directed that the suspect be immediately transferred to the state criminal investigation and intelligence department’s homicide branch for further investigation.

$12bn cash payment to service foreign debt in 2005 was a wrong move –Fashola

0

Nigeria’s Works and Housing Minister, Babatunde Fashola, has criticized the decision of 2005 Olusegun Obasanjo led government to pay $12 billion in cash to Nigeria’s creditors, out of the $30 billion sovereign debt in 2005.

According to Fashola as at the time tackling infrastructure was the more smarter move and he would have vehemently opposed the action if he was a member of the Federal Executive Council then. He argued that such a huge chunk of cash was better channeled into strategic investment in infrastructure, which would have been used to repay the debt later on.

Fashola, who spoke at a town hall meeting organised by Business Hallmark themed; “Nigeria’s infrastructure revolution; Road to a New Future”, maintained that tackling infrastructure decay was a higher priority than the repayment of the nation’s debt when the decision was taken.

“Our government in 2005 as a matter of policy decided to go and pay debt of $12 billion cash but our house was in very dire need. That was a policy choice. I would have opposed that decision if I was in government because we needed to invest urgently at that time.” Fashola, said at a town hall meeting organized by Business Hallmark themed; “Nigeria’s infrastructure revolution; Road to a New Future”

“If we had invested, the results of those investments would have earned us more revenues, much more income and would put us in a better position to service those debts. Fast forward to 2015, after paying $12 billion, we are now owing $32 billion.

“We look for the resources, invest them in infrastructure and use the returns to pay back this loan.”

The Minister, however, said that the Buhari administration has taken infrastructure to be a priority and that the government was currently implementing 896 road and bridges contracts covering over 13,000km in all the states of the federation.

The group which accused the Nigerian government of unlawfully abuducting its leader in Kenya and illegally detaining him, said the sit-at-home order will start on Monday, August 9 and will be enforced from 6:00am to 6:00pm.

They also threatened that should anything happen to Nnamdi Kanu, security operatives should not bother coming back to the South-East.

It read;

“We the global family of the Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB (IPOB) ably led by our great leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, wish to announce to all Biafra citizens, friends of Biafra and lovers of Biafra freedom and independence that IPOB leadership has declared every Monday ‘a ghost Monday,” the statement reads.

“This declaration takes effect from Monday, August 9, 2021. From that day Biafra land will be on lockdown every Monday from 6:00am to 6:00pm until our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu who was unlawfully abuducted in Kenya and illegally detained by the federal government of Nigeria is released.

“We wish to state full details of this coming ghost Mondays every week, our people must understand that it was designed to show the world how serious we are towards this fight for Biafra freedom and independence everybody must adhere to this clarion call put in place by the leadership of IPOB and it would be good for everyone to know that that IPOB will not relent until Biafra is fully achieved, the DSS can go ahead and keep our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu incommunicado without access to him and we observed that DSS operatives are torturing our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to the point of death that was why they don’t anybody to see his state of health in the DSS facility.

“DSS should know that if any thing untoward happen to him we are going to confirm what IPOB is made and they will understand that we are prepared for this freedom. Our Leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is not a criminal and has the rights to be visited in their custody. This is a call for Biafran leaders, politicians especially those mentioned their names as those behind his abduction and rendition to Nigeria, if anything happens to our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu all of them should prepare never come back to Biafraland because it will not accommodate us together. Nobody should take our quietness as coward Ness. Our intelligence reveals that Nnamdi Kanu is under serious torture and humaniliation because he refused all offer given to him.

“We declare every Monday sit- at- home throughout Biafra land until our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, regains his freedom. The federal government must allow him access to his personal physicians, and allow him to sign documents given to him by the British Government to provide him consular assistance. This peaceful protest will continue ones every week until our demands are met.

“We urge Biafrans to be prepared because we will no longer fold our arms while our leader who is fighting for the liberation of the oppressed indigenous nationalities in Nigeria is languishing in detention. We are going to cripple Nigerian economy until they free him.

“Consequently, all institutions public and private, transport companies, schools, banks, markets, airports and sea ports in Biafra land must shut down every Monday beginning from August 9. People are to remain indoors to register their concern over the fate of our Leader and the rest of all agitators languishing in various security detentions.

“Nobody should attempt to flout this directive as doing so may come with huge consequences. Anybody flouting this order is taking a grave risk.

“Nnamdi Kanu has sacrificed so much for Biafra, so sacrificing Mondays of every week is not too much for us. Fulani herdsmen have continued to kill our people yet the federal government failed to protect our people.”
