Obaseki announces N70,000 New Minimum Wage for Edo civil servants

The governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has officially approved a new minimum wage of N70,000 for civil servants in the state.

The government made the announcement on their X official account, mentioning that the payment of the new minimum wage will start on May 1, 2024.

The statement reads: “Gov Obaseki Increases Minimum Wage to N70,000 in Edo, Commissions Labour House, Names It After Comrade Adams Oshiomhole….

“The Governor made this declaration while commissioning the Labour House which is second to none, and regarded as the most magnificent Labour House in Nigeria, built by the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration, and named after a foremost labour unionist in the country who hails from Edo State, Comrade Sen. Adams Aliu Oshiomhole. 

“The minimum wage increase is to take effect from May 1, 2024.”

In May 2022, the governor announced a minimum wage of N40,000 for state civil servants.

There are also speculations that President Bola Tinubu may announce the new minimum wage on May 1 in commemoration of the International Labour Day and backdate its implementation to April.
