A Nigerian lawyer, Barrister Daniel Robinson, has stirred conversation online with a video in which he explains what spouses can and cannot claim when a marriage ends. According to GistLover, which reported on the video on November 7, 2026, he argued that simply spending many years in a marriage that collapses does not entitle either partner to a payout.
The ₦15 million example
To make his point, Robinson described a hypothetical case. A woman has been married for 18 years but has lived apart from her husband for the last five. She wants to leave and plans to demand ₦15 million as compensation for the years she feels she wasted. The report does not say this is a real case.
The lawyer questioned why she should be paid automatically without considering the husband's side. He said the man could equally say he gave 18 years of his own life to a relationship that did not work out.
