The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2 command in Lagos, Olahundare Moshood Jimoh, has rejected suggestions that officers under him were involved in a disputed property matter at Lekki Phase 1, where a demolition is alleged to have taken place. According to Legit.ng, which cited a report by The Nation, he spoke on the evening of Monday, November 2.
How the dispute started
The report says the row began when Alhaji Akeem Osuolale Ogunseye lodged a petition dated October 19, asking police to look into what happened at the property. The petition was reportedly sent through his lawyer and listed certain individuals as suspects.
The petition alleges that those named people entered the premises by force, damaged structures and took away items. It labels the episode an illegal invasion, destruction and looting, and puts the losses at above N1 billion. These are allegations, and the sources do not say they have been proven.
What the police investigation found
Jimoh said the command passed Ogunseye's petition to an investigation team. The team also considered a second complaint received on October 21, which claimed that police personnel had been posted to stop people from getting into the contested site.
After studying documents supplied by both sides, the team reportedly found nothing tying zonal command officers to any visit to the property. Based on that, the command stopped further action on Ogunseye's petition.
The AIG also observed that the petition itself named private individuals rather than police officers as suspects. He urged Ogunseye to bring concrete evidence if he wants to press claims that police were involved.
Jimoh on police and the media
In a separate report, Jimoh urged closer cooperation between the press and security agencies. He said constructive criticism from journalists helps public institutions improve and stay accountable.
He spoke in Abuja while accepting the Crime Fighter of the Year award from the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Federal Capital Territory Council, at its annual Press Week. Jimoh, whose zone covers Lagos and Ogun states, said reporters should be seen as partners in nation-building, not enemies, adding that responsible reporting strengthens democratic institutions and public trust.
