UBA Group, through the Tony Elumelu Foundation just approved a N5 billion relief fund to tackle COVID-19, across Nigeria. While N1bn would be spent to equip the medical centers with ventilators and medical supplies, Lagos will get a N1bn centre, Abuja will get a N500m centre and N1bn to be used to purchase ventilators and equipment in the other 35 states.
This move, which was announced Thursday, March 26, 2020 is a big philanthropic move from Tony Elumelu, the current chairman of UBA Group, who is known by all and sundry as not just a business man, but a billionaire who gives away freely. In the wake of this pandemic, most billionaire in the country have done little to fund the medical processes that will ensure that we are safe from Covid-19. Only a few have donated, but still little compared to this huge relief fund from UBA.
The fund which is $14m, is about N5bn and is quite a big step in combating the coronavirus outbreak in Lagos and other parts of Nigeria. And for the last hour, Nigerians on social media have been commending Tony Elumelu for this gracious move.
And, the mood on social media today is even changing towards that of good news, as for the first time in a while, only goodness is available. No new cases and six patients in Lagos fully recovered.
Anyway, while people are there commending the billionaire for donating that huge sum as a relief fund, seems the news will not go down well with some people. A certain Nneka replied the UBA Tweet calling out Tony Elumelu, saying he’s selfish and lacks integrity. She said;
“You are providing 5b for corona virus while you sacked your 5000 staffs beginning of the year and paid them peanuts as benefit, what a useless bank is this. So people will clap for you that you have done well. Tony Elumelu you lack integrity and you are selfish.”
While a lot of people are not giving attention to the tweet, a few Nigerians have decided to reply, of which most think although it’s sad it’s a story for another day.
Recall that Tony Elumelu recently just celebrated his 57th birthday, and celebrities like Wizkid took to social media to wish the mogul a happy birthday. Anyway, what do you think about this? Do you think Tony Elumelu is really selfish or he did what he had to do?
