Minister of Aviation Hadi Sirika has said reconstruction of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu State has not begun because the N10 billion project was not captured in the 2019 budget.
Sirika said the reconstruction would include a cargo terminal.
He added that mistakes made in the last reconstruction process would be corrected and the runway extended to allow the installation of approach lights for the airfield lighting systems.
The minister emphasised that the Federal Government was passionate about the airport, not because it was the only international gateway to the Southeast, but because it was one of the oldest airports in the country.
He noted that the contractors were yet to mobilise to site because his ministry was waiting for approval of funds by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) since the projects were not captured in the 2019 budget.
According to him, the over N10 billion needed for the reconstruction was coming under special intervention fund because the project was being treated as an emergency case as the runway collapse was not envisaged when the budget was being prepared.
