Hollywood might be huge but only a few actress of African descent can be considered A-list. Our Agency takes a quick look into the careers of one Nigerian and four other African actresses who are making it big in the industry.
From landing major leading roles to winning awards and getting honoured by royalty, these ladies have paid their dues as far as making it in the movie industry is concerned and are graciously enjoying the fruits of their labour.

Lupita Nyongo hails from Kenya but was born in Mexico. She is known for her role in the slave-exhilarating run in Hollywood and is one of the most sought after in the movie industry. The black beauty has also featured in high-grossing films such as Marvel’s Black Panther, The Jungle Book and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Thandie Newton was born in Westminster, London, to parents of African descent. Newton is one of the few actresses who has successfully navigated her way through the English and American film markets.
She was appointed as an Officer of the British Empire (OBE) in 2019 and was also nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series and two Critics Choice Awards, as well as a Golden Globe Award, Saturn Award, and Screen Actors Guild Award.
Danai Gurira was born in the US to Zimbabwean parents. Gurira is multi-talented and asides from being an actress, she is also a playwright and is best known for her roles in The Walking Dead, Black Panther, and Avengers.
Michelle Van Der Water
Born in Cape Town, South Africa, she, at a young age, left the country with her family to Australia. Michelle found her passion for acting at a very young age and this led her to enter institutions that could help hone her talents. She has been making waves in the industry for a while.
Echikunwoke was born to an English, German and Irish mother and a Nigerian father. The actress was discovered while performing in a theatrical production for an arts academy and began working professionally at age 15, appearing in an episode of The Steve Harvey Show.
In 2016, Echikunwoke appeared on the CW’s Arrow as the DC Comics superhero Vixen for an episode, as well as providing her voice for the character in a short animated series. As far as success goes, this brilliant actress is floating through life.
