The headies award which was formerly called the hip hop award started it’s first edition in the year 2006 and the first artist to win the highly respected and recognized next rated award is no other than female great vocalist, Asa.
Asa was the first artist to win the headies next rated award in the year, 2006. We all know the headies awards is one of the most prestigious and highly respected awards in the Nigerian music industry, i call it the Nigerian Grammy Awards.
Born Bukola Elemide in the year 1982 is A Nigerian- French singer, songwriter and a recording artist. Her genre of music is pop, jazz and indie pop. The singer was born in France to a Nigerian parents who were working and studying cinematography in France.
Her family returned to live in Nigeria when she was two. Aṣa grew up in Lagos city, in the south-western part of Nigeria, and 18 years later, returned to Paris, where her life as an artist took off. She had her major influence in music from a collection of songs her father had built up for his work as a cinematographer. This collection of music features Nigerian, American and African soul classics, From great artists like, Bob Marley, Marvin Gaye, Fela Kuti, King sunny Ade, Mariam Makeba, Nina Simone.
Asa is one of the most respected and highly creative songwriter and stage performer, a guitarist with great vocal skills. Asa has achieved a lot in her career from awards, to shows, collaboration and endorsement deals.
In 2004, Asa met her manager and friend, Janet Nwose, who introduced her to Cobhams Emmanuel Asuquo who in turn became the producer of her first studio album Asa (Asha).
Aṣa returned to France at the age of 20 to study at the IMFP school of Jazz music, where she was told by teachers that she should go ahead and become a recording artist because she was ready and needed no schooling. She later got her first deal with Naive Records in partnership with cobhams Asuquo after her first single, Eye Adaba was gaining a massive airplay.
