The Nigerian football community is in mourning following the tragic passing of Sunday Ndidi, father of Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi. The elder Ndidi, a retired military officer, lost his life today following a road accident in Umunede, Delta State.
Reports indicate that he was rushed to a hospital in Agbor shortly after the crash, where he was unfortunately confirmed dead.
Club and International Community Pay Tribute Wilfred Ndidi’s club, Beşiktaş J.K., was among the first to offer their condolences. In an official statement shared via their X (formerly Twitter) account, the Turkish club expressed their deep sorrow:
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of our footballer Wilfred Ndidi’s esteemed father, Sunday Ndidi, in a fatal traffic accident. May Allah grant mercy to the deceased; we extend our condolences to our footballer Wilfred Ndidi, his family, and loved ones.”
This heartbreaking news comes during a high point in Ndidi’s career. He recently led Nigeria as captain to a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, a tournament where he also celebrated scoring his first international goal for the Super Eagles.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Ndidi family during this incredibly difficult time.
