The aspirations of a Ghanaian mechanic for a better life in Canada have been shattered, leaving him not only empty-handed but also betrayed by a longtime friend who acted as an agent.
The unfortunate incident unfolded as the man, hopeful for a brighter future, fell victim to a deceitful scheme orchestrated by someone he considered a trusted ally.
In a video circulating online, the depressed mechanic recounted the events that led to his devastating predicament.
Mechanic heartbroken after selling his two cars to relocate to Canada; agent dupes him, sends him to Ivory Coast
The man, whose identity remains undisclosed, revealed that his dreams of relocating to Canada were initially fueled by a Facebook post from a purported friend who claimed to have successfully made the journey and was now enjoying a prosperous life.
Eager to seize the opportunity for greener pastures, the unsuspecting mechanic promptly sold his two cars and parted with a substantial sum of money—three thousand Canadian dollars, equivalent to N1.7 million—entrusting his friend-turned-agent with his aspirations.
Following the agent’s guidance, the hopeful Ghanaian embarked on a journey to the Ivory Coast, where he was promised a crucial interview that would pave the way for his migration to Canada.
However, upon arrival in the Ivory Coast, the mechanic was confronted with a harsh reality: his friend’s claims were nothing more than an elaborate ruse.
The supposed agent, who had convinced him of a thriving business opportunity in Canada, admitted to the deception, leaving the victim in a state of shock and despair.
The mechanic, now back in Ghana, bravely shared his harrowing experience in an effort to raise awareness about the perils of such travel scams.
“When I arrived there, my friend, who claimed to be in Canada, visited me after I went for the said interview in the Ivory Coast. She confessed that there was a business opportunity in the country and wanted me to join. At that point, I felt very sad and told my friend that her deceit had negatively affected me,” the mechanic said in part.
Expressing his deep sadness, he recounted the emotional toll of realizing that he had been swindled by someone he had considered a friend.
