A 40-year-old man has been meted with a death sentence after he allegedly murdered his lover by strangling her to death for ignoring him on Valentine’s day.
The convict who is identified as Badung David Dele was reported to have strangled his lover, Nanchin Zacharias in her apartment at Angwan Nasarawa Gwom, Jos, on February 15, 2016, for turning down his Valentine Day’s outing invitation.
This was after the convict reached out to the deceased to settle their differences and invited her for Valentine’s Day date but the deceased declined the invitation. Dele was said to have stormed the deceased’s apartment the next morning to demand an explanation since he felt their relationship was falling apart.
After they failed to reach an agreement, the convict reportedly grabbed his lover by the neck and strangled her until she gave up the ghost. He then fled the scene under the pretext of going to buy medicine for a sick friend.
He then gave his phone number to the neighbor by the name of Mama Joy to call him in case of any emergency. Mama Joy who sensed something fishy proceeded to break into the deceased’s apartment only to find her unconscious. She called for help and Dele was apprehended in the process and he confessed to committing the outrageous crime.
He was then convicted by Justice Christy L. Dabup of High Court No 11 and was found guilty of committing culpable hœmicide punishable under section 221 of the Penal Code of Northern Nigeria after he was arrested by the Nasarawa Gwom Divisional Police Headquarters, Jos.
Dele has now been sentenced to death by a High Court sitting in Jos, Plateau State on Tuesday 5th July 2022.
