Lizzo is named Time’s ‘Entertainer of the Year’

Capping what has already been a huge 2019 for her, Lizzo has been named Time’s “Entertainer of the Year.”

The venerable magazine revealed the recipients of its annual awards on Wednesday morning, with climate activist Greta Thunberg being named “Person of the Year.”

Adopted Minnesotan Lizzo has seen her profile skyrocket this year, with her latest album Cuz I Love You spawning runaway hits including “Truth Hurts,” which spent several weeks atop the Billboard charts.

She has enjoyed high-profile performances at major festivals including Glastonbury in the U.K., played sellout shows at The Armory in Minneapolis, and sparked a frenzy with her (inflatable butt-accompanied) performance at the VMAs earlier this year.

Time says Lizzo has earned the praise for her “relentlessly positive and impossibly catchy” sound and lyrics that are “funny, bawdy and vulnerable.”

Speaking to the magazine, she puts some of the credit for her success down to the trend towards body positivity, something she has always championed but had previously been seen as a protest, rather than a “trendy, commercialized thing.”

Next for Lizzo is the Grammy awards on Jan. 26, for which she has received eight nominations, more than any other act this year.
