Biography

As a child, Kamaru Usman wanted to be a footballer, but eventually found his calling in Mixed Martial Arts. With brilliant victories, he became famous all over the world and managed to become the first African athlete to win the title of UFC champion.

Childhood and youth

May 11, 1987 was the birthday of Kamarudin Usman. He was born and raised in Nigeria and is a Muslim.

Growing up, he had two brothers and a sister in the large family he grew up in. He also has a brother who competes in the UFC today, Mohammed Usman. His biography begins with Kamaru working on the farm of his parents.

During the fighter’s early childhood, his family moved to the US. Adapting to American culture was a challenge for the boy. But despite not speaking the language well, he was able to make friends.

He chose football as his sport of choice at the new school. Kamaru, however, changed his mind due to an injury and switched to wrestling so that he would not lose his job.

Because the coach couldn’t recall Kamaru’s name, he chose to call him Marty, and the young guy won his first victories under this nickname. For a long time, the fighter was afraid to tell his parents he had started martial arts because they would disapprove. But when the sport became so significant in the life of a young guy, they had to accept it.

Usman graduated from high school with an excellent record of 53 victories and only three defeats. He continued to pursue his pastime even after enrolling at William Penn University. Soon after, Kamara was transferred to the University of Nebraska, where he won the championship title in student-team events.

UFC career

In the years that followed, the athlete won several fights, earning him a spot on the reality show The Ultimate Fighter. He competed for the Blackzilians in the 21st season, becoming champion in the final bout against Hader Hassan. The title of best fighter of the night was an added bonus.

Following that, Kamaru continued his career in the UFC, thrilling fans with amazing battles against Leon Edwards, Alexander Yakovlev, and Demian Maia, all of which he won. This enabled the boxer to face Tyron Woodley and win the welterweight belt.

The athlete faced Colby Covington in his first championship defence at the end of 2019. The bout finished in a technical knockout for the opponent, earning Usman the title of “Fight of the Night.”
