‘I have never done laundry in my life, I don’t know how to wash anything. I’m not bragging’ – Seun Kuti

Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti opens up on his childhood experiences and relationship with his late father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

In a recent appearance on the Zero Conditions podcast, Seun Kuti acknowledged that he received preferential treatment from his father, who he described as an amazing dad to him, despite his siblings potentially having differing opinions.

Seun shared that his pampered upbringing has resulted in him never having to do laundry in his life. He attributed his privileged childhood to “winning the daddy lottery.”

He said:

“I won the daddy lottery. Fela Kuti is my favourite person in the world. If you asked my brothers they could say he’s a terrible dad but to me, he was an amazing father,” he said.

“You don’t know how spoilt I was growing up. Till now, I have never done laundry in my life. I don’t know how to wash anything. I’m not bragging.”

Seun also discussed his musical journey, revealing that he joined his father’s band, Egypt 80, at the age of 8.

“I have been with Fela’s Egypt 80 band since I was 8 years old. So when Fela died my family asked me to continue with the band & keep all the money I make,” he said.

in a recent interview with Timi Agbaje, he expressed that becoming a father is his greatest achievement, highlighting the joy of raising his daughter.

Seun Kuti who has two daughters from two different mothers, acknowledged that he is not close to his first daughter due to a lack of connection with her mother.

He said:

“The greatest thing I have ever achieved is becoming a father, having my daughter, being with her, and raising her.

“I have two kids but I’m not really close to my other daughter but to have the joy of that is the greatest achievement of my life for sure”.
