A tragic attack unfolded in Abia State as gunmen ambushed a police convoy at Ubakala in Umuahia South Local Government Area, resulting in the death of a police officer and severe injuries to another.

The incident occurred around 9 p.m. on Sunday, November 17, sparking renewed concerns over rising insecurity in the region.

The attacked convoy, reportedly linked to a federal lawmaker from the state, was traveling without the legislator present when the assailants struck. According to police sources, the gunmen, dressed in black and wearing police jackets, blocked the convoy—a Toyota Corolla carrying two officers and a driver—before opening fire upon confirming the victims were law enforcement personnel.

In the exchange of gunfire, one officer lost his life on the spot while another sustained critical injuries and is feared dead. The gunmen fled as reinforcements from the Ubakala Police Division arrived at the scene.

This attack comes just four days after another violent incident in the state, where gunmen k!lled two soldiers at a checkpoint in Umuopara, near the Abia-Imo border, raising further concerns about security in the region.

At the time of this report, Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Maureen Chinaka, had yet to issue an official statement on the incident. Investigations are ongoing as the authorities intensify efforts to track down the perpetrators of these attacks.
