An Upper Area Court, Mpape, Abuja ordered that four people, who allegedly extorted cancer patients and engaged in human trafficking-related activities in the FCT , be remanded in prison.
The police charged Princess, Victor, Francis and Makinde (surnames withheld) with three counts of criminal conspiracy, cheating and extortion of cancer patients and vulnerable people brought into the FCT.
Trial judge, Hassan Muhammad, remanded the defendants in Keffi Prison, pending hearing in a bail application,
Muhammad adjourned the matter until May 29, for hearing
Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Mr. Donatus Abah, told the court that the defendants were apprehended on May 18 in Kubwa, for allegedly assembling cancer patients and taking them around the FCT, soliciting for funds.
Abah alleged that the defendants acted dishonestly by converting the funds released on behalf of the sick persons to their personal benefit.
He also alleged that from the facts in the FIR, it appears that a likely case of trafficking in humans, maybe be involved in the process.
“But I don’t have the full facts now, that is why I pray the court to kindly remand the accused persons in the prison custody, so that by the time I go back to the office of the Area Commander, where the matter emanated from, we will be able to know what to do”.
Following the not guilty plea by the accused, Abah made an application to the court, for them to be remanded in prison pending hearing in bail applications.
Mr. Pius Onigah, prayed the court to admit his clients to bail.
