First time senators have now been barred from contesting the positions of the senate president and deputy.
This came after Senate Leader, Michael Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central) pushed for a motion to amend the senate’s “Standing Order”. Majority of the senators supported the motion after it was put through a voice vote by Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
Following the amendment on Tuesday, October 3, senators vying for the positions of the Senate President and Deputy Senate must have served at least one-term in the Senate.
The amendment is coming after Akpabio defeated first time senator, Abdulaziz Yari, to secure the senate president position.
