In July 2019, Beyonce released the album The Lion King: The Gift, and with it came the Wizkid, Blue Ivy and Saint Jhn featured Brown Skin Girl.
Brown Skin Girl, described as a celebration of dark-skinned women as its lyrics deal with colourism faced by darker complexioned women, immediately became a fan favourite causing the viral brown skin girl challenge.
The song made its debut on the billboard hot 100 chart at number 76 and was ranked as the 68th best song of 2019 by the American entertainment media brand. Brown Skin Girl won the Ashford and Simpson’s songwriter’s award at the 2019 Soul Train Awards.
While Blue Ivy’s contribution to the song is very soul-stirring. Wizkid is outstanding on the record, perfectly matching Beyonce’s delivery on what easily became one of the standout singles on the album.
While Wiz can applaud himself for his amazing performance on the song, he made the whole of Africa proud that one of the continent’s best could collaborate with one of the world’s best singers of the past couple of decades and be just as amazing. Wizkid, you’re doing well.
Wiz was a key contributor to the success of Drake’s record-breaking 2016 One Dance, but the song DOESN’T have an official video. One Dance did, however, feature in Drake’s short film Please Forgive Me directed by Anthony Mandler, and released on September 26, 2016.
It was shot in South Africa and while it featured Kyla, Wizkid wasn’t in, so when news made the rounds right at the end of October 2019 that Beyonce was shooting the video for Brown Skin Girl, we were all super excited that it could help project the brand of the brown skin boy from Ojuelegba to the rest of the world.
According to the Daily Mail, the video was being directed by Jenn Nkiru, who had previously worked with Bey and Jay-Z on Apeshit. In Jenn’s call for casting it requested for black and brown people of different cultures, nationalities, ethnicities, genders and ages.
That was in the final quarter of 2019, and guess what guys? We are still waiting for the video.
So what happened? What is happening? In December 2019, Billboard published a ten-minute long clip of Beyonce’s Video Evolution and right at the end of it was a video marked as the Brown Skin Girl.
While we can’t ascertain if that is the official video or not, though it is very doubtful, what we can say is that we hope that Beyonce and Wizkid and Blue Ivy and Saint Jhn decide to give us the music video for a song with surpassed 100 million streams in March 2020.
