An Area Court sitting in Jos, Plateau State has sentenced a 31-year-old man, Sani Ukasha, to jail for failing to produce an accused person he stood for surety.
The defendant had earlier been arraigned in court for allegedly stealing seasoning cubes, but he was granted bail.
However, during the continued hearing on Thursday, he was nowhere to be found and the police prosecutor, Inspector Gokwat Ibrahim informed the court that the surety failed to produce the accused person in contravention of the State Penal Code.
Ukasha pleaded guilty to the charge and pleaded for leniency.
In his ruling, Justice Shawomi Bokkos, sentenced the surety to three months imprisonment with an option of N10,000 fine.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police command recently claimed that the police officer who was assaulted by Afrobeats singer, Seun Kuti is in coma.
According to SaharaReporters, police prosecutors asked the Magistrate Court 1, Yaba for a remand order to detain Seun for 21 days.
A source said the prosecutor claimed that the officer was receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
The source said; “The Chief Magistrate Mrs, Adeola Olatunbosun Magistrate Court 1 Yaba took statement from the Nigerian police applying to detain Seun Kuti for 21 days, claiming the policeman he allegedly assaulted is in a coma at an undisclosed hospital.
“However, Kuti’s lawyer, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika countered that the police already stated publicly that the police officer trailed and went to Seun’s house and accepted N12,000 to repair his car. It also emerged that the DCP in Panti had gone to meet the Magistrate earlier before secretly moving Seun to the court without notifying his lawyer.
“They also accused Seun of not writing a statement, but Olumide-Fusika countered that he was there when Seun wrote a statement. The Chief Magistrate decided to go on recess to ‘study the file.’”
Chief Magistrate, Adeola Olatunbosun, however, granted bail to the defendant.
