In the midst of lock down, about thousands of people all over Australia and New Zealand stood outside their homes at night to celebrate Anzac Day, as they were asked to pay tribute.
Anzac Day happens to be a national day of remembrance which is quite essential event for both countries which attracts large number of crowds for the services. The national day was said to have been suspended due to the corona virus in both countries.
After some thought, people were told urged to hold a candle in their driveways and live stream services.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern expressed sadness over the cancellation of the event and in her statement she said “While we cannot gather in person, we join in spirit as we remember the service and sacrifice of New Zealanders in times of war and crisis.”
While Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said “I look forward to the entire nation, on their driveways, lighting up the dawn, remembering our heroes and drawing inspiration from them for the task and challenge we currently face.”
