Mixed reactions have trailed the duration of hours announced by Guinness World Records for Nigerian chef, Hilda Effiong Bassey, aka Hilda Baci, to become holder for the longest cooking marathon.
The GWR announced Hilda as the new record hold for the longest cooking marathon in a statement released via its website on Tuesday, June 13, 2023.
The 27-year-old had last month cooked for 100 hours non-stop, breaking India’s Lata Tondon’s 87 hours 45 minutes record of uninterrupted cooking in the process.
The organization, however, recorded 93 hours 11 minutes for the Akwa Ibom State chef.
It said that the over seven hours was deducted from Hilda’s final total because she mistakenly took extra minutes for one of her rest breaks early on in the attempt.
It said,” However anyone attempting a marathon record receives a five minutes break for every hour that they complete. This is to allow suitable rest breaks for the participants due to th prolonged nature of these records.
”In this case, there was a miss calculation when it came to Hilda’s rest breaks, meaning we are unable to award the 100 hours claimed.”
”I can now announce with a time of 93 hours and 11 minutes, Hilda Baci is the new holder of the Guinness world records title for the longest cooking marathon. Congratulations, you are officially amazing,” a Guinness representative said in a video.
Reacting to the development, some Nigerians said the GWR should give more details of the reason why the duration was deducted while others congratulated Hilda without giving concern to the numbers.
@BlaqLolly said; “They removed 7 hours. GWR Dey move like INEC.
@DoroAustyn wrote; “There are rules to this, for every record set it takes another four years to attempt breaking it. Dammy and co did not even verify properly before attempting knowing that hildas own was still under review. That is witchcraft man.”
