The Lagos State Government has denied reports claiming that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu filed a suit to prevent the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from investigating or prosecuting him after his tenure. The denial follows a report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), which suggested that Sanwo-Olu sought legal protection from possible EFCC actions post-office.
In a statement on Tuesday, October 29, Lagos Attorney-General Lawal Pedro clarified that neither the governor nor his representatives are facing any EFCC investigation, nor is there any threat of arrest by the anti-graft agency. Pedro emphasized that Sanwo-Olu, who still enjoys immunity under the constitution, would have no reason to initiate such a case, given that he has nearly three years remaining in office.
“We need to clarify that Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, at no time, sued or briefed any legal practitioner to file a suit on his behalf,” the statement read. Pedro confirmed that the Lagos government is actively investigating how the case was filed without the governor’s knowledge.
He praised Sanwo-Olu for his commitment to transparent governance, adding, “Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who is busy working to improve the living conditions of all Lagosians, has nothing to fear upon leaving office in May 2027.”
