INEC has officially scheduled the Anambra state governorship election for November 8, 2025.

Mahmood Yakubu, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), made this announcement during a consultative meeting with political parties in Abuja on Thursday.

Yakubu explained that under Nigeria’s electoral law, notice for elections must be published no later than 360 days before the scheduled date. He also indicated that political parties should conduct their primaries for the election between March 20 and April 10, 2025, urging them to use the timetable to organize their activities accordingly.

He recalled that the last governorship election in Anambra state was held on November 6, 2021, and, by law, the next election is due next year. The formal notice for the upcoming election will be published on November 13, 2024. Party primaries must be completed between March 20 and April 10, 2025, after which the candidate nomination portal will open on April 18, 2025, closing on May 12, 2025. The final list of candidates will be published on June 9, 2025, and the official campaign period for political parties will begin on June 11, 2025, ending at midnight on November 6, 2025.

Yakubu emphasized that voting will take place across all 5,720 polling units in Anambra state on the scheduled election day. He added that in the coming weeks, the commission will release more information regarding voter registration, transfer of voters, and the replacement of lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
