No fewer than 38 people have reportedly drown in a boat accident which occurred in Kuna village in the Kirfi Local Government Area of Bauchi state.
TONTRENDS gathered that two corpses were recovered in the boat mishap while another two were also rescued in the boat conveying 40 passengers.
There was uncertainty over the whereabout of the remaining victims.
The incident was said to have occurred on Monday when the deceased transported themselves to their farms in a canoe which capsized in a river.
The Caretaker Chairman of the Local Government, Alh. Bappa Abdu Bara, who disclosed this to newsmen in Bauchi on Tuesday confirmed that only two people survived.
He added the State Emmergency Management Agency (SEMA) was searching for the corpses of the remaining deceased persons.
He said “I want to commiserate with the people of Kirfi, Bauchi State and Nigeria as a whole over the loss of our brothers on their way to their farms. They entered canoe they were 40 in number on Monday, 7th October 2019, and unfortunately, all of them were drowned only two people escape, but the remaining 38 drowned.”
“We discovered two dead bodies along Badara. We conducted searched in water ways but didn’t find the remaining corpses. We pray Almighty Allah to forgive the souls of the people who lost their lives.”
But the police command in Bauchi confirmed the death of four persons in the tragic incident.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP, Datti Abubakar , which was made available to newsmen in Bauchi .
The PPRO said ” On 07/10/2019 at about 1130hrs the Police attached to Kirfi Police Division, Bauchi State Police Command, received a distress call, that a canoe loaded with 25 passengers all male at Kuna river, Kirfi LGA capsized”
”On receipt of the distress call, Police rescue team in collaboration with local people were immediately mobilised to the scene and successfully rescued eighteen 18 passengers”
”As at the time of writing this, four people were confirmed dead while three (3) passengers are still missing, but effort is in progress to trace and possibly rescue them”
Meanwhile, Governor Bala Mohammed has donated N10 million to families of the victims who were drowned in the boat mishap. The Governor who was on a visit to the area, commiserated with the families of the victims.
Mohammed,who expressed shock over the incident, set up a committee to ensure judicious distribution of the donation.
