Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, yesterday, warned impeached council chairmen against returning to office.
The governor in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Kingsley Fanwo, said the last week reinstatement of some councils boss sacked by the former governor, Idris Wada, did not extend to those who were properly impeached in the eyes of the law.
The statement read: “The attention of the Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello has been drawn to attempts by some impeached Chairmen to forcefully resume office on the strength of the earlier directive that Council Chairmen and Vice Chairmen earlier barred from resuming office for political reasons be reinstated.
”For the avoidance of doubt, Chairmen that were impeached by the legislature should respect the rule of law and our judiciary and stay away from office while those that were barred from resuming office due to their political associations are allowed to resume office through a rancour-free process.”
The Governor directed relevant authorities and security agencies to help ensure compliance with the directive. He said: “In clear terms, impeached Chairmen cannot benefit from the directive, as the governor will not ambush the authority of the legislature as a believer in the rule of law.”
In a related development, Chairman of Lokoja Local Government, Aliyu Baba Usman has dissolved all political appointments in the council .
The chairman in a statement by his Media Assistant ,Yabagi Mohammed, said the decision became necessary for the chairman to face the challenges confronting the councils.
According to the statement: “Appointees beginning from secretary to the council to all other appointees stand dissolved with immediate effect. New members to the council would be appointed when the new administration fully take over the Local Government machinery.”
Aliyu thanked members of the immediately dissolved executive for their service to his administration while they were in office and assured them of continuous cordial relationship.
