The next Assassin’s Creed game has been rumored for Egypt once again

There was no new Assassin’s Creed game in 2016, allowing Ubisoft to step back and consider how to revamp the series. According to the latest rumors from WWG, it seems the developers have taken the extra time to focus on the core story of the whole series.
Previous rumors of the next game in the franchise have focused around an Egyptian setting. Although these rumors are unfounded, there was enough truth in them so far that they carry some merit. The sources for WWG double down on these Egyptian rumors, adding that the game will be called Assassin’s Creed Origins.
Assassin’s Creed Origins will revolve around the original assassin’s guild and feature two main characters. Like Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, Origins is also said to star a man and a woman. If this game truly is going to be about the original assassin’s guild, it could finally answer some long-held questions about the series, like what the heck all those pieces of Eden are about.
As an added bit of information, WWG reports boats will return in Assassin’s Creed Origins. This isn’t that surprising, seeing as how naval combat of some kind has been in many Assassin’s Creed releases since Assassin’s Creed 3. In Assassin’s Creed Origins, naval combat would take place on the Mediterranean, which opens up the possibility of players exploring the area. This means players might be able to go as far as Italy, Greece, Spain, Turkey and more.
To add even more speculation to the conversation, WWG claims a second source has confirmed seeing ancient Egyptian imagery in an internal video shown to Ubisoft employees. This second source mentions the video starts in Egypt before transitioning to scenes from other parts of the world throughout time. Specific scenes included in the video were a World War II-era France, an unnamed Asian country and a modern-day Abstergo facility.
Assuming these rumors are true, this would likely become chronologically the first game in the franchise. The original Assassin’s Creed still holds that honor, being set in 1191. With an Egyptian setting, this could go all the way back to 3000 B.C. or even earlier. For context, the famous Egyptian Pyramids were estimated to have been built from 2589 to 2504 B.C. Moses was said to have been alive anywhere from 1571 to 1271 B.C. A game set in either of these two time periods could make sense.
Alternatively, if you take into account the clue of the video, Assassin’s Creed Origins could be set in multiple locations. If this truly is about the origins of the Assassin organization, a game where players jump around multiple major turning points would make sense. This could include an Asian setting and the World War II France level mentioned above.
Regardless of where and when the game is set, it’s a safe bet there will be a return of the modern-day Abstergo narrative. Ubisoft doesn’t want to let a game go by where you aren’t dragged out of the past and forced into boring conversations. Hopefully there will be something interesting this time around that will make the modern-day scenes feel like less of an exposition drop.
Assassin’s Creed Origins is rumored to be revealed at this year’s E3 in June. A release date in early to mid-2018 would make the most sense, as Ubisoft isn’t keen to rush out a new Assassin’s Creed game.
So what do you think? Are you interested in seeing an Egyptian Assassin’s Creed game? What is your take based on all these rumors?
